Background on Scott R. Blazek

Scott Blazek, stricken with polio at the age of four, began to draw to pass the many hours while bed-ridden. After his recovery (by God’s grace), he continued his graphic pursuits through elementary and high school in the New Orleans area. Attending the Univ. of Southwestern Louisiana (USL – Lafayette – now UL) he earned his B.A. in Advertising Design (’71). During college, he received various student awards in national competitions. Blazek pursued higher education at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, receiving a Master of Divinity in 1975. Since then, he has served as a pastor to three consecutive congregational calls in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, while also serving various vacancies.

As a part time illustrator, Blazek has executed designs (in some cases – bas relief plasters) for numerous commemorative medallions/coins. He got his start in 1966 with Mardi Gras “doubloons” racking up hundreds of 6” pen & ink designs over five decades. He designed the obverse for the 1989 – CSNS, 50th anniversary commemorative medallion (awarded through a national competition). He also designed the obverse for the 1993 – U.S. $5.00 gold coin commemorating James Madison & the Bill of Rights (one of six accepted designs out of over 850 nation-wide submissions). His other medallions include: 1996 – 450th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther; 1997 – 500th birth anniversary of Philipp Melanchthon; 1997 – 150th anniversary of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, and two “Prayer Coins” (the 1998 obverse plaster was prepared in the ANA Art of Engraving).

He has also designed numerous award-winning posters and has illustrated eleven published children’s books (nine in the Clovis Crawfish series – Pelican Publishing Co.). He taught six semesters of Art Appreciation at Clovis Community College. Blazek wrote and illustrated coloring books covering subjects such as God’s Ten Commandments, The Lord’s Prayer, and The Nature of God, God’s Gifts for His Children, Super Heroes of the Bible and a series of color books for Altrusa. He resides in Clovis, NM (a mere coincidence to the name Clovis Crawfish) with his wife Margaret. They have five children: two boys and three girls (all adults now). Blazek enjoys working with portraits, historic and religious themes in pen and ink, acrylic and bas relief sculpture.

The picture directly to the right is a piece of artwork that currently hangs in Laura Curtis’ house, one of Scott’s daughters. shadows_on_the_teche.jpg The painting to the left, is called “Shadows on the Teche”. This piece of artwork was done at the request of his daughter, Laura, upon her graduation from high school. This painting also hangs in Laura’s house.
